Jeff Berg & Bill Caloccia,
Seen the false horizon fade away like bisons Headed for the jungle, the cowboy can't endure Never look back, that's what he swore I'll take my pony to the shore Somewhere, somewhere -- Take Another Road Jimmy Buffett/Jay Oliver/Roger Guth
PRELUDE TO AN INVASIONBill Caloccia was looking for an event to launch the newly-formed Empire Rover Owners' Society (EROS), his brainchild, off to a good start. One of the clubs basic tenants is to promote no major events of our own , as we're all proud to be members of other clubs like Ottawa Valley Land Rovers (OVLR) and Rover Owners Association of Virginia (ROAV) and we are already way-too-busy attending existing functions. Besides, as Bill points out, "When haven't we been able to crash someone else's party and make it our own." So when the Delaware Valley-based Royal Offroad Vehicle Expeditionary and Recreational Society (R.O.V.E.R.S.) posted email promoting a Saturday beach drive in Maryland, Bill rang Tom Bache for details. Deciding that this was the ideal opportunity for an EROS invasion, he notified the the usual suspects. Not everyone could make it but some could. So on April 5th the Delaware Valley-based R.O.V.E.R.S. beach drive/camp out at Assateague Island National Seashore became the first event on the EROS social calendar. The Empire members who would journey to the event (all of whom are also southern members of OVLR) included Jeff Berg in FINSUP a '67 IIa swb and Quintin Aspen in his J-reg 2-door Classic Range Rover. It also happened that these were the only pre-LRNA vehicles present. Bill Caloccia and Spencer Norcross attended but couldn't bring their Rovers so they rode with Jeff. After numerous phone calls, email messages, and visits to the Mapquest website, a travel plan (of sorts) was finalized. Some time between 4 and 5pm on Friday evening, Jeff and Bill would rendezvous at the designated rest area on Maryland Route 13–just before the intersection of Route 299 and Route 13, and continue south to Ocean City in caravan. Spenny would meet them at the Ocean City Holiday Inn early the following morning, and Quintin and his group would join the party at the Assateague Island Ranger Station for the start of the event.
