Round Mountain

Near Stephentown, SE Rensselaer County, NY

The sign half way up the hill says that the road is seasonal and not maintained from Dec. 1st to April 1st. The winter had been mild, but there was still snow in the higher elevations. Eric, Mark and Bill decided to have a go. The trail was in good shape, with some snow above, and only one spot where Bill's Rangie on 'normal' tyres grounded. Bill was able to back off and reapproach the snowy uphill curve staying out of the ruts, and both vehicles made it to the top, where the wind was a steady 25 mph, the rain horizontal, and the view slightly overcast. We didn't stay long. The descent was very slick in spots due to the snow cover, but not troublesome.

Following Round Mtn. Rd. we 'missed' the turn-off for Cherry Hill sanctuary, and then headed for Garfield to pick up Mary's Camp Road. The deep valley sheltered a road that was icy in parts, but was in fair shape to the pleateau. There it became wetter, and the rock strewn path required more attention to forward navigation. Both stock and raised Rangies bottomed in places, but neither grounded nor got stuck.
